On 30 October 2026, the Icelandic Competition Authority (ICA) cleared Ásar’s (formerly Síminn) acquisition of Öryggismiðstöð Íslands and Opin kerfi subject to commitments.
These were conglomerate mergers where the telecommunication company Ásar acquired a security company (Öryggismiðstöð Íslands) and an IT service provider (Opin kerfi). The ICA raised concerns that the deals could leverage Ásar’s position in telecommunications, potentially creating barriers to entry and foreclosing competitors if customers were required to bundle their telecom, security and IT services.
The transactions were cleared after Ásar offered binding commitments not to make the purchase of monitored residential security services conditional on customer also subscribing to Ásar’s fixed-line telephone or fixed-line internet services.
The RBB team assisting Ásar in the process was led by Petter Berg and Jan Peter van der Veer, with support from a wider team including Jimmy Gårdebrink. RBB worked alongside competition counsel Logos.
