Hyung-Joong (HJ) is an Associate Principal at RBB Economics.
HJ has over 10 years of experience in competition economics, including his start of the career at the European Commission’s DG Competition Chief Economist Team, as well as his time at another global economic consulting firm.
HJ has extensive experience in competition economics, specializing in merger control and abuse of dominance cases before the European Commission, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, and other international competition authorities. His case experience covers a wide range of industries, including technology, software, telecommunications, transport and railway, aerospace, energy, automotive, out-of-home advertising, fast moving consumer goods such as food and beverages.
He has advised clients across numerous complex Phase I and Phase II merger reviews, including high-profile transactions such as NVIDIA/Run:ai, Hitachi Rail/Thales GTS, Air Canada/Air Transat, Alstom/Bombardier Transportation, and Siemens/Alstom.
His expertise spans conducting risk assessments, developing framework on theories of harm, conducting market definition analyses, econometric demand estimations, merger simulations, and assisting clients with multi-jurisdictional filings.
In addition to merger control, HJ has experience in abuse of dominance matters under Article 102 TFEU and has contributed to major follow-on damage litigation cases, including econometric estimations and economic assessments of harm in the heavy truck manufacturers investigation.
He holds a BSc and an MSc in Economics from the University of Amsterdam.
