Veolia’s acquisition of Friedrich Hofmann GmbH cleared after Phase II investigation

Following a Phase II investigation by German Competition Authority, the Bundeskartellamt, Veolia is set to expand its waste management and recycling business in Germany after receiving conditional clearance to acquire Friedrich Hofmann GmbH on 30 November 2023.

The Bundeskartellamt’s Phase II investigation focused on regional markets for the disposal of glass, lightweight packaging, paper, household and organic waste.  The acquisition adds Friedrich Hofmann GmbH, the largest provider of waste management services in Northern Bavaria, to the approximately 250 sites that Veolia already currently operates in waste management, wastewater treatment, water supply and energy supply in Germany.  The clearance is subject to the sale of one location in Nuremberg.
