The Second Annual RBB Economics Johannesburg Conference was held on the 14th of February 2013, at the Sandton Sun hotel. The conference discussed many of the key issues and developments in competition law and economics in South Africa and Europe, and their practical implications for competition practitioners. The main topics discussed were:

  • Why it is important to understand the true nature and scope of competition in a particular industry.

  • The pursuit of conduct that does not amount explicit coordination as an infringement "by object".

  • The role of economic evidence in horizontal and non-horizontal mergers.

The sessions drew upon experience and evidence from a variety of cases, but most notably the Google/Motorola merger and the UK tobacco investigation.External speakers included Norman Manoim, Chairperson of the Competition Tribunal of South Africa, and Thomas Janssens from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Brussels.
