On the 20th July 2004, the EC Commission cleared without conditions the merger between BMG and Sony. This decision is in marked contrast to the position taken by the Commission in the earlier Time Warner/EMI case which would have also reduced the number of leading suppliers of recorded music from 5 to 4.
