Patrick Smith will speak at the GCR Live conference in Cape Town on the 5th and 6th of December. Patrick will join a panel discussing public interest factors in African competition policy, and his participation follows an article on this topic in the GCR’s African & Middle Eastern Antitrust Review. Several high profile cases have illustrated the potential for competition decisions, and in particular merger inquiries, to be significantly affected by public interest issues. Patrick will cover some of the most notable cases, discuss how these factors can influence wider implementation through prioritisation, and outline some of challenges relating to the presentation of evidence, and the balancing of these issues with a standard competition test.
