Block exemption for liner shipping consortia extended

On 24 March 2020 the European Commission extended the block exemption to liner shipping consortia for four years until 25 April 2024. The block exemption allows operational cooperation between liner shipping companies in providing scheduled services for the transport of containers, subject to conditions (including a 30% market share cap). Following an evaluation of the block exemption, the Commission concluded that liner shipping consortia reduce costs through economies of scale, rationalisation of services, and better vessel utilisation. RBB assisted the World Shipping Council, a trade association for the liner shipping industry, alongside law firm Baker Botts.
