Joan de Solà-Morales is a Partner based in RBB’s Brussels office. He has extensive experience in the economic assessment of mergers, having advised on numerous Phase II investigations before the European Commission, raising horizontal, vertical and conglomerate concerns. Joan also advises regularly on multi-jurisdictional mergers involving multiple competition authorities around the world, and has given expert testimony before national and arbitration courts on competition issues and other commercial disputes. He has also worked on the economic analysis of abuse of dominance cases, horizontal agreements, and vertical restraints.
Joan’s experience spans a wide range of sectors, including online and brick-and-mortar retailing, automotive, aircraft components, pharmaceuticals, express delivery services, car rental, airlines, music publishing, insurance, airports, port operations, mobile telephony, fast-moving consumer goods, branded goods, and trains, among many others. Clients that Joan has worked for include EssilorLuxottica, Alstom, FedEx, Cargill, Halliburton, Oracle, Hertz, Siemens, Samsung, and Unilever.
Joan has published in specialised journals regarding the economic assessment of mergers and damages, and is featured in Who’s Who Legal – Future Leaders (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020). Joan has given training seminars in competition economics and taught at the Brussels School of Competition. He studied economics at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, UAB in Barcelona, and UvA in Amsterdam. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Catalan.
