Dr Ethel Fonseca is a Partner in RBB’s London office. She joined RBB in 2008, having previously worked at the World Bank. Since joining RBB, Ethel has worked on competition matters before the European Commission as well as various national authorities, including in the UK, Brazil, Portugal, and South Africa.
Ethel has extensive experience in merger assessment, having worked on many in-depth Phase II investigations. She has also worked on transactions involving the development and coordination of economic analysis across multiple jurisdictions globally. Ethel has also advised clients on other aspects of competition policy including market enquiries, abuse investigations, cartels and follow-on damages. Recent clients include FedEx, Qualcomm, Maersk and Panasonic.
Ethel has run training seminars in competition economics and taught at the Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Economics for Competition Law at King’s College, London. She holds a PhD in Economics from Rutgers University, USA and, having specialised in applied microeconomics and econometrics during her PhD studies, Ethel has particular expertise in the application of quantitative techniques to competition policy. She is a member of the W@Competition Board and is featured in Who’s Who Legal. A Brazilian national, she is fluent in English and Portuguese.
