Dr Ethel Fonseca is a Principal in RBB’s London office.  She joined RBB in 2008, having previously worked at the World Bank.  Since joining RBB, Ethel has worked on competition matters before the European Commission as well as national authorities, including in the UK, Brazil, Portugal, and South Africa.

Ethel has extensive experience in merger assessment, having worked on many in-depth Phase II investigations.  She has also worked on transactions involving the development and coordination of economic analysis across multiple jurisdictions globally, including Syniverse/MACH and Munksjö/Ahlstrom, the first two Merger Control Agreements signed by CADE under the new Brazilian competition law of 2012, and, most recently, FedEx/TNT.  Ethel has also advised clients on many other aspects of competition policy including market enquiries, abuse investigations, cartels and follow-on damages.

Ethel has run training seminars in competition economics and taught at the Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Economics for Competition Law at King’s College, London.  She holds a PhD in Economics from Rutgers University, USA and, having specialised in applied microeconomics and econometrics during her PhD studies, Ethel has particular expertise in the application of quantitative techniques to competition policy.  A Brazilian national, she is fluent in English and Portuguese.
