Session 1: The changing role of competition economics across china, Europe and South AfricaNicholas French, Freshelds Bruckhaus Deringer
Nicholas co-heads Fresheld’s China antitrust, competition and trade law practice. He currently splits his time between Beijing, Hong Kong and London, having been based exclusively in Beijing between 2009 and 2011. Nicholas has advised clients on a wide range of EU, UK and Asian competition issues, and hence is well placed to offer a comparative perspective on the use of economics within competition law across developed and developing jurisdictions, and how this is changing over time.
Session 2: Panel discussion: Legal and economic challenges in private damages actions

A panel of experienced competition practitioners, will discuss the challenges facing plaintiffs and defendants, as well as the courts themselves, in private damages actions.
The session will also include a short overview of some of the key findings from the recently published European Commission study on the passing on of overcharges. The study was prepared by RBB Economics and the law rm Cuatrecasas, and is intended to provide judges and other practitioners with practical guidance on assessing economic evidence in relation to pass-on in the context of competition law infringements.
